Water birth as a VALID birth option in Paris
I am a passionate advocate for physiological, undisturbed birth, and I strongly believe that with the right preparation, women can unlock incredible confidence in their body’s innate ability to birth.
Having welcomed my third baby in a birthing pool at home, water birth holds a very special place in my heart. (You can read my personal birth journey in this blog post. However, you certainly do not need to plan a home birth to experience the benefits of water!
Water birth is a beautiful, valid option for healthy mothers and their newborns within the French Maternity System. It can be facilitated at home with an independent midwife, in a plateau technique, or a Maison de Naissance, and even in a few hospitals across Paris. Home Birth pools can be rented, either through myself, or other doulas around Paris.

Education is the Key to Empowerment
As always, being an educated parent who makes informed choices significantly increases the chances of a positive experience. With the right support, water birth is even a valid option for women planning a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) or HBAC (Home Birth After Caesarean).
The Evidence-Based Benefits of Water Birth
Recent research and physiological evidence highlight clear benefits for healthy mothers and newborns:
- Weightlessness: Buoyancy provides incredible relief when heavily pregnant and experiencing surges, allowing you to intuitively adopt positions that might be difficult on dry land.
- A Protected Environment: Being in the pool naturally creates a more private, calm, and relaxed space, which often leads to fewer interruptions, vaginal examinations and less interventions.
- Natural Pain Relief: Warm water aids the relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles and has been shown to reduce the need for pharmacological pain medication.
- Perineal Protection: Birthing in water has been shown to increase the likelihood of an intact perineum and reduce the risk of severe tearing.
- A Gentle Transition: Water birth facilitates a calm, physiological transition for the baby, often leading to a straightforward initiation of breastfeeding due to the high levels of oxytocin.
Understanding the Risks and Logistics
Water birth is extremely safe, and clinical guidelines are strictly followed by your medical team to ensure the wellbeing of both mother and baby. However, true empowerment comes from understanding all scenarios:
- Assessment Needs: In the event of a complication, or to accurately monitor blood loss after birth, you may be asked to leave the pool so your medical team can safely assess you.
- Labour Stalling: Occasionally, entering the water too early in labour can cause surges to space out or diminish. (Don’t worry, as a Doula, I have plenty of physiological tools to help get things back on track!).
- Infection Protocols: While extremely rare, strict hygiene protocols are required to prevent bacterial transmission in the water.
