Let’s be honest: The French Maternity System is world-class.
If you have a medical emergency during your pregnancy, or at time of birth, there is arguably no better place to be than in a French Maternity. The safety net here is wide, it is strong, and yes, it is largely free.
Because of this, there is a pervasive narrative making rounds in the expat community: “Don’t worry, the midwives are great, the hospital is free, you’ll be fine.”
This is the “Good Enough” Illusion. It’s the belief that, because you are medically safe, you are fully supported. It’s the idea that because your vitals are being tracked, your transition into motherhood is being tended to.
But for the expat mother, “fine” could potentially be a dangerous standard. Here’s why…
The Clinical Ceiling
The French maternity system is designed for clinical efficiency. It is excellent at taking your blood pressure, measuring your belly, and monitoring your baby’s heartbeat. But, this system is currently stretched to its limit.
The incredible midwives in the public system have 15 minutes to check your physical vitals. And the independent midwives (the good ones) are often overbooked. They have the capacity to check your vitals, but not always the time to check in on your soul.
They cannot sit with you to unpack your fears, and they certainly aren’t “in your pocket” when you’re spiralling at 9pm because of something that your mother-in-law said. In the “Good Enough” Illusion, you are a patient to be followed medically, not a woman to be held emotionally.
The Expat Reality: Navigating the Gap in Support
Navigating birth in a second language, away from your “village,” creates a gap that clinical care simply cannot fill. You walk out of a consultation feeling physically checked, but emotionally invisible. You are safe, yes. But are you Held?
This is where the “Good Enough” model fails. It leaves you in “The Void“
The Void is that four-week stretch between appointments where you are mostly left alone with Dr. Google and your anxiety. It’s that space where you’re surrounded by other expat mothers who are likely spiralling just as much as you are. This is where the difference between “Standard Care” and “Premium Support” becomes not just a luxury… it becomes a lifeline.
Why You Need a “Unicorn” (Not Just a Midwife)
We are lucky in France to have such amazing clinical support. I wholeheartedly appreciate the work of midwives; for some women, the free classes and house calls are enough.
But for the woman seeking a deeply personalised approach… one that focuses on her individual preferences, her specific mindset, and her unique birth goals… standard care just doesn’t cut it.
In an ideal world, every woman would have a Midwife and a full-time Birth Doula. But that isn’t always the right fit for every lifestyle or every bank account.
I saw too many brilliant, capable women crumbling in the gap between “Free Support” and “Full-Scale Doula Accompaniment.” They wanted more than a pamphlet, but they didn’t necessarily need (or want to pay for) a doula’s physical presence at the birth itself.
They needed a middle ground practical and emotional anchor.
In the birth world, this “Unicorn” is that rare guide who bridges the gap between clinical safety and emotional holding.
That is exactly why I created the ZEN Bespoke Birth Preparation mentorship.

This program isn’t a “cheaper” alternative to a Doula… it is a sophisticated evolution. Also, I do not replace your medical team, I sit beside their clinical excellence to fill the gaps they simply cannot touch.
While the system provides the Safety, I provide the Holding.
🏥 Standard Care is a generic birth class in a room full of strangers, or 1:1 in a midwife’s practice.
🪷 The ZEN Birth Approach is sitting on your sofa, tailoring every strategy to your personality, your partner, and your chosen place of birth.
🏥 Standard Care is a pamphlet on pain relief.
🪷 The ZEN Birth Approach is a 130-page signature toolkit, a bespoke online learning platform with tons of educational videos, and a late-night voice note reminding you exactly how to breathe when the waves hit.
🏥 Standard Care is “Call us if you’re bleeding.”
🪷 The ZEN Birth Approach is “Text me if you’re feeling wobbly, unsure, or just need a cheerleader.”
